How to Buy Exterior Shutters
in the USA: Step-by-Step
German-style exterior shutters are available in the US — but the buying process is unlike ordering a standard home improvement product. This guide takes you from decision to installation day without the confusion.

The 6-step buying process
1Choose the right system for each window
The most expensive mistake buyers make is specifying one system for the whole house when different windows need different solutions. Bedrooms want blackout — living rooms want daylight control. Here is the decision matrix.
| Your situation | Best system | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom — need complete blackout for sleep | Exterior Roller Shutters | Interlocking slats create 100% blackout when closed. Cannot be achieved with venetian blinds or screens. |
| Living room — want shade but keep the view | External Venetian Blinds or ZIP Screen | Venetian blinds tilt to redirect light while preserving view. ZIP screens at 5–10% OF let you see out while blocking 80–90% of heat. |
| Home office — monitor glare is the main issue | ZIP Screen (3–5% OF) or External Venetian Blinds | A ZIP screen at 3% OF eliminates glare entirely without needing slat angle adjustment through the day. |
| South/west-facing terrace or pergola | ZIP Screen | Wide spans up to 196 in. Wind resistance to 75 mph. View preserved. External venetian blinds not available in terrace-width spans. |
| Ground floor — security is a concern | Exterior Roller Shutters (ALUMINO or ALUMINO protect) | Closed roller shutters add 3–8 minutes of forced-entry resistance. ZIP screens and venetian blinds offer no security function. |
| Florida / Gulf Coast — hurricane protection needed | Accordion or roll-down hurricane shutters + Roller Shutters | Hurricane code compliance requires NOA-certified products. Add exterior roller shutters to windows where daily comfort and blackout matter — the two systems complement each other. |
| Whole-house energy savings priority | Exterior Roller Shutters on bedrooms + Venetian Blinds on living areas | Roller shutters on all windows maximizes solar blockage (90%+). For south-facing living rooms, venetian blinds give the same heat reduction while preserving daylight quality. |
| New build or full window replacement | Any — with Aufsatzkasten (integrated box) | New builds allow the box to be integrated flush into the wall (Passivhaus grade insulation, no visual protrusion). Same product, much cleaner result. |

2Measure your windows correctly
Incorrect measurements are the single most common cause of re-orders and installation delays. Measure twice — the installer will verify on-site, but accurate numbers mean your quote is binding rather than estimated.
What to measure
Measure the outside width of the window frame — not the glass, not the opening in the wall. For surface-mount boxes, add 2–3 inches each side for the guide rail attachment. Record to the nearest ¼ inch.
From the underside of where the box will sit (above the window head) to the sill or desired stop point. For surface-mount, the box sits 4–8 inches above the window frame top. Add that to the window height.
The distance the window frame is recessed from the wall face. A reveal of 3+ inches may allow the guide rails to be set in, reducing the visible projection. Under 2 inches: surface-mount guide rails will project slightly from the wall face.
Note the material at all fastener points: wood framing, brick, poured concrete, CMU block, stucco over frame, EIFS. Masonry requires anchors — tell the installer before quoting, not on installation day.
Measurement record sheet
Fill one row per window:
| Window | Width (in) | Drop (in) | Reveal (in) | Wall material | Orientation | System |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Master bed | — | — | — | — | — | — |
| Living room | — | — | — | — | — | — |
| Office | — | — | — | — | — | — |
| Kitchen | — | — | — | — | — | — |
| Guest bed | — | — | — | — | — | — |
Print or copy into a spreadsheet. Send with your quote request.
⚠️Do not rely on nominal window sizes
3Write a quote specification — not just a description
Vague requests get vague quotes. A specification document forces every supplier to quote the same product, making price comparison meaningful. Here is a template you can use verbatim.

💡Why itemized quotes matter
4Vet your installer — 4 questions that reveal competence
The US market for German-style exterior shutters is thin. Many "installers" have done fewer than 20 jobs. These four questions separate experienced specialists from people who watched one YouTube video.
Q1: Which motor protocol do you use — Somfy RTS or io-homecontrol?
"We specify io-homecontrol as standard. It gives position feedback and works properly with smart home automations. We only use RTS when the client explicitly requests it for budget reasons."
"We use Somfy motors." (No mention of protocol — they do not know the difference.)
Why it matters: io-homecontrol is bi-directional: the motor confirms its position after every command. RTS is one-way. For smart home automations and multi-motor scenes, io is essential. An installer who cannot explain this has likely never set up a proper automation.
Q2: What fastener pattern do you use on masonry?
"We drill and sleeve-anchor at 6-inch centers for the guide rail, with 3-inch minimum embedment. We use stainless hardware on coastal projects."
"We screw into the wall." (No mention of anchor type, spacing, or embedment depth.)
Why it matters: A guide rail failure mid-drop damages the shutter, motor, and possibly the window. Correct masonry anchoring is non-negotiable — and it takes a specific drill bit, correct sleeve anchor gauge, and proper torque. Vague answers mean they improvise on the day.
Q3: Do you program the motor limits on-site?
"Yes, always. We set the upper and lower limits with the manufacturer remote before you sign off. We also walk you through how to re-program if limits drift after the first season."
"The motors come pre-set." (Limits are never pre-set for a custom installation — the travel distance is unique to each window.)
Why it matters: Motor limits define where the shutter stops when fully open (so it retracts cleanly into the box) and fully closed (so slats interlock without over-compressing). Wrong limits cause jams, motor overload faults, and slat damage.
Q4: What is your labor warranty and what does it cover?
"One year on installation labor. If a fastener pulls, a rail misaligns, or a motor limit drifts within 12 months, we come back at no charge. Product warranty is separate — manufacturer covers defects."
"Call us if something breaks." (No defined scope, no timeline.)
Why it matters: Installation errors — misaligned rails, incorrect fasteners, wrong limit settings — often only show up after the first season of use. A one-year labor warranty is standard and reasonable to require.
5Installation day — what to expect
| Stage | What happens | Your role |
|---|---|---|
| Layout & verification | Crew measures each opening, confirms wall material, marks fastener positions. May differ slightly from your pre-measurement. | Be available to answer questions. If the crew finds a discrepancy vs. the quote, discuss before drilling. |
| Box mounting | Box is positioned above the window, pilot holes drilled, anchors set. On masonry: hammer drill + sleeve anchors. On wood frame: lag screws into studs. | Check that box is level and plumb before rails go in. Much easier to correct now than after. |
| Guide rail installation | Rails attached to box and anchored to wall at 6-inch spacing. Motor installed in box (for solar: solar panel positioned for sun exposure). | Ask the crew to show you how the solar panel faces — it should have clear sky access, not be blocked by an overhang. |
| Shutter drop & function test | Shutter fabric or slats threaded into rails and connected to motor drive. Motor cycled manually to check travel. | Watch for any binding in the rails. A shutter that hesitates mid-travel during the first test indicates a rail alignment issue. |
| Motor limit programming | Installer sets upper limit (fully retracted into box) and lower limit (fully closed). Both positions verified. Remote or app paired. | Operate the shutter yourself before the crew leaves. Confirm limits feel correct. |
| Final check & handover | Sealant applied around box penetrations and rail attachments. Cleanup. Walk-through of operation, remote pairing, and any smart hub setup. | Confirm all penetrations are sealed. Get the warranty documents and motor serial numbers in writing. |

6Commission & automate after installation
🏠 Smart home setup (Somfy TaHoma)
- 1.Plug TaHoma switch into Ethernet (near router) — not Wi-Fi only
- 2.Download TaHoma app → create account → scan hub QR code
- 3.Add each motor: go to Devices → Add → your installer set each motor to pairing mode with a remote click
- 4.Name rooms and devices clearly: "Master Bedroom East" not "Shutter 1"
- 5.Enable HomeKit / Alexa / Google link in TaHoma settings
- 6.Set your first automation: close all to 80% when outdoor temp exceeds 85°F

⚠️ The 5 most expensive buying mistakes
What it costs: Overpaying for roller shutters on south-facing living rooms where venetian blinds would give better daylight, or under-specifying ZIP screens on a terrace that needs large-span coverage.
Fix: Use the decision matrix above. Budget per window, not per house.
What it costs: Custom-manufactured product arrives from Germany and does not fit. Re-order takes 6–10 weeks and costs $200–$500 in restocking fees.
Fix: Require the installer to do a paid pre-installation site survey before manufacturing is confirmed.
What it costs: RTS motors save $30–$80 per window. When you add smart home automation later, you discover RTS cannot reliably report position — and the whole system needs to be re-motorized.
Fix: Specify io-homecontrol from the start. The $30–$80 premium pays back in the first month of reliable automation.
What it costs: ROMA exterior shutters are manufactured to order in Germany. Standard lead time is 4–8 weeks after order confirmation. Buyers who want installation before summer often order in April — and miss the window.
Fix: Order by March for May/June installation. Order by August for September/October. Add 2 weeks buffer for customs clearance.
What it costs: An incorrectly sealed wall penetration causes water intrusion discovered months later. A motor limit set too tight causes the motor to fault after the first freeze. Both avoidable on the day.
Fix: Use the installation day checklist in Step 5. Do not sign off until you have operated every shutter yourself.

How long does it take to install exterior shutters in the US?↓
A surface-mount (Vorbaukasten) installation with solar motors takes 3–5 hours per window for an experienced two-person crew. A full house (8 windows) typically runs 2 days. Hardwired motors add 1–2 days for the electrical rough-in. Custom-colored or special-order systems require 4–8 weeks of lead time from Germany before installation can begin.
Do I need a permit to install exterior shutters?↓
In most US jurisdictions, exterior roller shutters fall under the same permit category as window replacements or exterior alterations. Requirements vary by municipality. Surface-mount systems attached to the facade without structural changes are rarely permit-required. In HOA communities, you may need architectural review approval for visible facade changes. Florida hurricane shutters require a permit in most counties.
What wall material is easiest for exterior shutter installation?↓
Wood-frame walls with vinyl siding or HardiePlank are the simplest — fasteners go directly into the wall stud or window buck with standard hardware. Brick and masonry require concrete anchors at 6-inch spacing, adding 1–2 hours per window but creating the most secure attachment. Stucco-over-frame is straightforward but requires sealant around fastener penetrations to prevent water intrusion. EIFS (synthetic stucco) requires extra care to maintain the continuous insulation barrier.
Can I install exterior shutters myself (DIY)?↓
Surface-mount boxes with solar motors are technically DIY-installable if you are comfortable with exterior carpentry and ladder work. The motor programming (setting upper and lower limits) requires the manufacturer's remote and about 20 minutes per motor. That said, errors in fastener placement on masonry or incorrect motor wiring void most warranties. Most buyers find the labor savings ($200–$400 per window) not worth the risk on a $1,500+ product.
How do I compare quotes when suppliers use different product names?↓
Specify the product by manufacturer and profile code in writing: e.g. "ROMA ALUMINO profile, Vorbaukasten QUADRO box, Somfy Altus io motor." If a supplier cannot match that spec, ask them what they would substitute and why. Never compare quotes that list only "exterior shutter" without profile, box type, and motor brand — the price range spans 3× from budget to premium for what looks like the same product.
