2Measure your windows correctly
Incorrect measurements are the single most common cause of re-orders and installation delays. Measure twice — the installer will verify on-site, but accurate numbers mean your quote is binding rather than estimated.
What to measure
Measure the outside width of the window frame — not the glass, not the opening in the wall. For surface-mount boxes, add 2–3 inches each side for the guide rail attachment. Record to the nearest ¼ inch.
From the underside of where the box will sit (above the window head) to the sill or desired stop point. For surface-mount, the box sits 4–8 inches above the window frame top. Add that to the window height.
The distance the window frame is recessed from the wall face. A reveal of 3+ inches may allow the guide rails to be set in, reducing the visible projection. Under 2 inches: surface-mount guide rails will project slightly from the wall face.
Note the material at all fastener points: wood framing, brick, poured concrete, CMU block, stucco over frame, EIFS. Masonry requires anchors — tell the installer before quoting, not on installation day.

4Vet your installer — 4 questions that reveal competence
The US market for German-style exterior shutters is thin. Many "installers" have done fewer than 20 jobs. These four questions separate experienced specialists from people who watched one YouTube video.
Q1: Which motor protocol do you use — Somfy RTS or io-homecontrol?
"We specify io-homecontrol as standard. It gives position feedback and works properly with smart home automations. We only use RTS when the client explicitly requests it for budget reasons."
"We use Somfy motors." (No mention of protocol — they do not know the difference.)
Why it matters: io-homecontrol is bi-directional: the motor confirms its position after every command. RTS is one-way. For smart home automations and multi-motor scenes, io is essential. An installer who cannot explain this has likely never set up a proper automation.
Q2: What fastener pattern do you use on masonry?
"We drill and sleeve-anchor at 6-inch centers for the guide rail, with 3-inch minimum embedment. We use stainless hardware on coastal projects."
"We screw into the wall." (No mention of anchor type, spacing, or embedment depth.)
Why it matters: A guide rail failure mid-drop damages the shutter, motor, and possibly the window. Correct masonry anchoring is non-negotiable — and it takes a specific drill bit, correct sleeve anchor gauge, and proper torque. Vague answers mean they improvise on the day.
Q3: Do you program the motor limits on-site?
"Yes, always. We set the upper and lower limits with the manufacturer remote before you sign off. We also walk you through how to re-program if limits drift after the first season."
"The motors come pre-set." (Limits are never pre-set for a custom installation — the travel distance is unique to each window.)
Why it matters: Motor limits define where the shutter stops when fully open (so it retracts cleanly into the box) and fully closed (so slats interlock without over-compressing). Wrong limits cause jams, motor overload faults, and slat damage.
Q4: What is your labor warranty and what does it cover?
"One year on installation labor. If a fastener pulls, a rail misaligns, or a motor limit drifts within 12 months, we come back at no charge. Product warranty is separate — manufacturer covers defects."
