Carpet Installation Cost: What You Actually Pay Beyond the Carpet Itself

Updated June 2026 · 7 min read · Sources: HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Carpet Exchange

The price on the carpet tag is only part of what you will pay. Padding, tack strips, furniture moving, stair installation, and removal of your old carpet can add 40–80% on top of the carpet cost alone. Most homeowners are surprised when they see the final invoice. This guide breaks down every line item so there are no surprises.

Carpet and padding cost: what you are buying

Carpet price is driven by two independent choices: the fiber and the face weight. Fiber determines durability and stain resistance. Face weight (measured in ounces per square yard) determines density — how thick and plush it feels underfoot. A cheap fiber at high face weight still underperforms a quality fiber at moderate face weight.

FiberMaterial / sq ftDurabilityStain resistanceBest for
Olefin (polypropylene)$0.50–$1.50Fair — crushes easilyGood (solution-dyed)Basements, low-traffic, rental units
Polyester (PET)$0.75–$2.00Fair-Good — less resilient than nylonVery good — naturally stain-resistantBedrooms, low-traffic living areas
Triexta (SmartStrand)$1.50–$3.50Good — strong fiberExcellent — built-in, permanentFamilies with kids and pets
Nylon (type 6.6)$2.00–$5.00Excellent — most resilientGood (with treatment)High-traffic areas, main living spaces
Wool$4.00–$12.00Excellent — 50+ yr lifespanModerate — requires prompt cleaningFormal rooms, luxury installations

Face weight: the number most salespeople skip

Face weight measures how much fiber is in the pile, in ounces per square yard. More fiber = denser carpet = better durability and feel. Do not compare face weights across fiber types (a 40 oz polyester is not as good as a 40 oz nylon), but within the same fiber, higher face weight is almost always better.

Padding: the part that makes or breaks the feel

Carpet padding (also called underlay or cushion) is what you actually feel underfoot — not the carpet fiber itself. It also affects sound dampening, thermal insulation, and how long the carpet lasts. Skimping on padding under quality carpet is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make.

Padding TypeCost / sq ftNotes
Basic foam (rebond, 6 lb)$0.30–$0.50Standard install; adequate for budget carpet; compresses faster
Standard foam (8 lb density)$0.45–$0.65Most common residential; good balance of cost and performance
Premium foam (10 lb)$0.60–$0.85Noticeably better underfoot feel; longer lasting
Felt / fiber pad$0.65–$1.20Firmer feel; better for berber and loop carpets; excellent longevity
Memory foam$0.80–$1.50Luxurious feel; best sound reduction; pair with cut-pile only
Moisture barrier pad$0.50–$0.90Waterproof backing; recommended for pet households and basements
Rule of thumb: Spend at least 25–30% of your carpet budget on padding. A $3/sq ft carpet on a $0.70/sq ft pad will feel worse and wear out faster than the same carpet on a $1.20/sq ft felt pad. Most carpet warranties specify a minimum pad density — installing below it voids the warranty.

Labor and add-on costs most quotes do not include

Installation labor

$0.50–$2.00 / sq ft

Basic carpet installation (stretching, cutting, tacking) runs $0.50–$1.00/sq ft for open floor plans. Complex rooms with many angles, closets, or built-ins run $1.00–$2.00/sq ft. Labor for Berber and loop-pile carpet costs slightly more because cuts must align to prevent runs. National average: $0.50–$1.50/sq ft.

Old carpet removal

$0.70–$1.60 / sq ft

Pulling up old carpet and pad, rolling it, and hauling it away typically costs $0.70–$1.20/sq ft for stapled carpet and $0.80–$1.60/sq ft for glued-down carpet (common in older homes and commercial spaces). Some installers include removal in the quote; most charge separately. On a 1,200 sq ft whole-home project, removal adds $840–$1,440.

Tack strip replacement

$0.15–$0.35 / linear ft

Tack strips are the thin wood strips around the perimeter of carpeted rooms that hold the carpet edge. They last indefinitely if undamaged, but older strips may have bent nails, rot, or be missing sections. Replacement runs $0.15–$0.35/sq ft for material plus a small labor charge. On a full home, budget $100–$300 if strips need replacing.

Furniture moving

$50–$150 / room

Approximately 65% of carpet installers include furniture moving in the quote or offer it as a flat add-on. Heavy items — pianos, pool tables, wall units — cost $100–$300 extra. Many installers require the room to be cleared before they arrive and refuse to move certain items. Clarify this in writing before scheduling.

Stair installation

$11–$45 / step

Stairs are almost always quoted separately from flat floor areas. Waterfall installation (carpet flows over each step edge without a seam) runs $11–$25/step. Cap-and-band (each tread is wrapped and tucked separately — more labor, cleaner look) runs $25–$45/step. A 14-step staircase typically adds $154–$630 to the project total. Always ask upfront whether stairs are included.

Seams

$30–$75 per seam

Carpet comes in 12-foot-wide rolls. Any room wider than 12 feet requires a seam. A good installer uses heat-activated seam tape and places seams in low-visibility areas (under furniture, parallel to light). Visible seam placement or poor seam work is one of the most common installation complaints. Ask the installer in advance where seams will fall.

Total project cost by room size

These all-in estimates include carpet, padding (standard 8 lb foam), labor, and tack strips. They exclude old carpet removal, stair installation, and furniture moving.

Full home 2,000 sq ft$5,000–$8,000$8,000–$14,000$14,000–$24,000

Add $840–$1,440 for old carpet removal on a 1,200 sq ft project. Add $154–$630 for a 14-step staircase. Add $200–$600 for furniture moving.

4 questions to ask every carpet installer before signing

1. Is old carpet removal included in this price?

Most installers quote carpet only and charge removal separately. If removal is not clearly included, add $0.70–$1.60/sq ft to your budget. Some installers quote a bundled price — ask explicitly.

2. Are stairs included, and what is the installation method?

Stairs are almost always a separate line item. Ask whether the price covers waterfall or cap-and-band installation, and how many steps are included. Cap-and-band looks better and lasts longer on stairs — it is worth asking for even if slightly more expensive.

3. Where will the seams fall?

For any room wider than 12 feet, a seam is unavoidable. Ask the installer to show you on a room sketch where seams will be placed. Good installers position seams under furniture or perpendicular to the main traffic flow. Never accept seams across high-traffic walkways.

4. What is the minimum pad density specified by the carpet warranty?

Most quality carpet warranties require a minimum pad density (typically 6 lb rebond for budget carpet, 8 lb for mid-grade, with a maximum thickness of 7/16"). Installing below the specified pad density or above the maximum thickness voids the warranty. Get the pad spec in writing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does carpet installation cost per square foot?
All-in (carpet + padding + labor): $2.50–$4/sq ft for budget, $4–$7/sq ft for mid-grade nylon, $7–$12/sq ft for premium. On a 12×12 bedroom, mid-grade carpet runs $580–$1,010 fully installed. These figures exclude old carpet removal, stairs, and furniture moving.
Is carpet sold by square foot or square yard?
Carpet is manufactured in 12-foot-wide rolls and sold at the industry level by the square yard. Retail quotes vary — some stores list per square foot, others per square yard. Always confirm which unit the quote uses. Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards. A 1,500 sq ft home = 167 sq yd.
Do I need new padding when replacing carpet?
Yes, almost always. Old padding compresses and loses its cushioning, and installing new carpet over worn padding makes the new carpet feel and wear like the old one. It also voids most carpet warranties. New padding adds $0.30–$1.50/sq ft — budget at least $0.60/sq ft for standard residential performance.
How much does carpet installation cost for stairs?
Carpet on stairs costs $11–$45 per step. A 14-step staircase runs $154–$630 depending on carpet grade and installation method. Cap-and-band installation ($25–$45/step) looks cleaner and lasts longer than waterfall ($11–$25/step). Stairs are almost always quoted separately from flat floor areas.
How long does carpet installation take?
An installer covers 300–500 sq ft per day on open floors. A 1,500 sq ft whole-home re-carpet takes 1–2 days. A 14-step staircase adds 2–4 hours. Rooms with many closets, angles, or built-ins take longer. Carpet can be walked on immediately after installation — no curing time required.
